So long as we have to defend our positions in fora like this, at least we are thinking critically, regardless of our respective positions.

Very well put, Jim. When you look at most controversial issues in America, I can hardly think of one that has more than 60% public support either way. So perhaps a definition of the center is someone who picks and chooses among these issues and doesn't follow a left-leaning or right-leaning line in each and every case.

I always follow my gut instinct that when the Right or the Left comes up with a platform that can win 60-65% of the population and keep them behind that movement, there will be some kind of lasting governing majority.

But we have not seen that for years, and probably won't for many more years to come.
