As I understand it, the thrill from gambling results from a release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that causes pleasurable feelings.

Some people are hard-wired to seek risk, some are hard-wired to avoid risk.

I would imagine a Ph.D. economist is likely hard-wired to avoid risk except in very controlled situations (say, riding a roller coaster).

I guess what I am saying is that for gamblers (which I am not) morality doesn't appear to enter into the equation. It's no more (or less) rational than bungee jumping, or jumping out of perfectly good airplanes.
