1. I'm not against nuclear power. I would like to have better plants than Chernobyl and, most importantly, would like to know where the heck the waste will be stored AND how it's going to get there.
The current idea is Yucca mountain with something like 25,000 traincars (aka big dirty bombs) criss-crossing the US for the next quarter century. Is this a good idea?
2. Brazil started their alternative fuels programs in the 1970s. If we start now with satellite offices, work at home, carpooling, mass transit, micro cars, flex time, 10 hour/4 day workweeks, etc. we may have something in 40 years...or even sooner.
3. People keep saying that ethanol is a lousy alternative but they mostly mean ethanol from corn. Now they're talking about ethanol from sugarcane or switchgrass as being much more efficient so now they come up with more problems. Good. Problems can be solved or, if not, we're walking ANYWAY.
Crops are, in theory, CO2 neutral.
There are limited known petroleum reserves so we're walking ANYWAY.
The rain forest is being deforested because the human population of the world has tripled in Ted Turner's lifetime. Nix the golf courses and grow switchgrass.
