I hear you. He and Feingold both suffer from being far left of the mainstream in their respective parties.

But you know, the pendulum swings both ways eventually....out of Reagan/Bush came Clinton/Gore, and from Clinton/Gore came Bush/Cheney....and it seems to me that the pendulum has been on the Right side (and pretty far right at that) for a long time. Being at war probably slows the swing left, so a moderate republican with Douglas's abilities would probably make a good candidate for the GOP in 2008. I think it is probably more important to the RNC to keep the oval office than to keep the office conservative.

It is similar reasoning that causes the RNC to support Sen. Chafee in Rhode Island.
