Sun unveils new corporate data server

mercurynews.com

From the article:"...The Sun Fire X4600 rack server -- a large computer that runs networks and Web sites, stores massive amounts of data, and handles heavy computational work like animation and software development -- is one of the few servers for large businesses that can be powered by eight dual-core Opteron chips from Advanced Micro Devices. The Opteron chips are 64-bit microprocessors that have two computing brains on one chip, which means they can crunch huge amounts of data quickly..."

This is the first AMD based server to replace the old line SPARC machines. Next will be the Niagra based machines. I wonder if they will use both types of processors in one server package.

The next generation machines should also require much less energy too. SUNW should continue to maintain the high end lines and perhaps could steal share from DELL because of better service packages and customer support.
