the two things I don't like about Penntrade, the higher commissions, $27-$30, and the portfolio tools are not adequate, more manual effort to keep track of positions.

IB commisions often $2-$3.
One disadvantage with Ameritrade, is if US markets are closed, you can't enter Canadian orders. I think you can with Penntrade.
