LG.Philips the world's biggest maker of large liquid crystal display (LCD) panels in 2005, reported after Tuesday's market close a larger-than-expected 322 billion won ($340 million) net loss in the second quarter.

The poor numbers triggered earnings forecast cuts from a number of brokerages including JPMorgan and Nomura Securities.

LG.Philips also forecast its margin on earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) would be in the "low teens" percent in the third quarter, below analysts' estimate of 16-18 percent.

The EBITDA guideline, which compares with 10 percent in the second quarter, would translate into another operating loss in the third quarter, taking into account depreciation costs. LG.Philips posted an operating loss of 372 billion won in the second quarter.

Price competition has crushed margins at LCD makers and forced LG.Philips to scale back output. A panel glut is expected to persist throughout the year after the sector failed to get an expected boost from the soccer World Cup, analysts said. ($1=946.5 Won)
