Shorter Podhoretz: Perhaps the Bush Doctrine will work better next time.

Let us not forget that neocons are called "neo" for a reason. They used to believe in the worst cliches of mid-20th century liberalism, that the nature of mankind is malleable and can be transformed if only persons of good will try hard enough.

They never got over the belief that other people are willing to change themselves and their lives at great personal inconvenience in order to make the neocons happy (that is, achieve what the neocons think is best for us).

I think their mothers must have spoiled them when they were young, and they've never gotten over it. Spoiled mama's boys.

I think they also believe that Reagan, and therefore (in their minds) themselves, ended the Cold War and thus can accomplish anything they set their minds to.

They talk the talk but they don't personally walk the walk. That's for people like the American taxpayer and the American military to do.

BTW, Bush didn't come up with the Bush doctrine. That was people like PNAC and AEI, in other words, Cheney. I doubt Bush would have gone for it but for 9/11. Not his type of thing, really.
