This is how my divorce worked:

He proposed that he devise an appropriate split of our investments and that I do the same for our stuff, which we each did, and which we each accepted with only the most minor change. I was supposed to go to the Dominican Republic equipped with his power of attorney for a weekend to get the divorce but I had to work so he went. And that was that.

Regardless of circumstances and laws, it really, really helps if both parties to the divorce are SANE. If they're not, there will be a mess regardless.
