I gave up on chess after I became completely obsessed with it -- memorizing entire books on openings, dreaming about games all night, etc. -- just around the time Bobby Fischer was revealing what a looney tunes he was turning into. My 15-year-old brain thought I might go the same way, and maybe it was right.

I have played poker 7 times and won money every time, but I have no desire to play again as I dislike gambling. (Then why am I investing in junior resource stocks? Because I like to think I can reduce the gambling aspect through research and thought.)

After a foray into go, which ended up intimidating me because it was so much harder than chess, I ended up majoring in bridge for several of my undergrad years. (Oops, missed another class. Oh well, deal another hand.)

Like poker, bridge also relies on the human element, reading your player and opponent, and my partner and I were very good at psych bids and the bridge equivalent of bluffing -- putting the opponent in a position where he/she has to make difficult decisions.) My partner was a real wildman, and we even racked quite a few IMPs while scandalizing the blue rinse set at the local bridge club.

It must have been quite a sight -- two long-haired teenagers, clearly drug-crazed, among the tables of old ladies.
