Idiosyncracies just make for a richer range of opinions and comments to movie discussions. We all see the world thru the prism of our own experiences. After serving in the military, I was quite into the Vietnam experience movies ie Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, then Platoon and Full Metal Jacket came along and I swore off war movies for a long time. I did see a recent one,
"Brothers"-- Brodre-- which I thought did a good job of capturing some of the psychological effects of war. But usually I just leave Vietnam flicks off any lists. The Quiet American was an excellent change of pace re; Vietnam, from my perspective.
On the other hand, Rabbit Proof Fence I think provides a broader cultural view, from the aboriginal side, for a change, which is worthwhile. I also liked Dances with Wolves a great deal for the way it portrayed the plains Indians. Family and sentimental connections to the Mandan-Hidatsa. It is always interesting to see what connects with people.
