Well, I recall collective punishment has a certain OT Biblical seal of approval.

This, to me, does not make it a good thing; indeed, somewhat the opposite.
But it might explain why so many apparently sane and intelligent Israelis seem to think killing 50-odd civilians and blockading a country is a reasonable response to the capture of two of their soldiers by a terrorist group powerful in that country.

I'd be startled if the US would have been so mild in its criticism if we'd shelled and blockaded Dublin, bombed Galway and sent tanks into Tyrone in reprisals for IRA actions, but hey. Shame we didn't try?

The alternative, that the Israelis do it because they can get away with it, don't care about the hypocrisy in their actions, see no reason to be less evil than the terrorists, and view the lives of non-Israelis as worth less (or indeed worthless) is of course unthinkable.
