I remember reading an interview with Burroughs when he was quite old. One thing he said stuck in my mind, both because it is such good common sense and because it was a most unexpected thing to come out of the mouth of the author of The Naked Lunch. He said the secret of housekeeping is to always take something with you (e.g. plate, cups etc.) when you go out the room heading for the kitchen. You can't argue with that.
