well 5-7 days to ship from Apple basically means they are out of local stock.

JR has units but Compusa is out, Best buy is "sold out" (except their trial stores), Macmall and others say "please call" and they've said that for a while. What that means is there isn't any US based inventory in the distributors. Trust me, JR will be out in about a day and a half too.

I haven't followed apple with a new Mac before so not sure. To me it seems like things are either selling at 3x normal pace, or apple has some quality issues that are restricting supply. I think its the former.

Quanta which is a larger CM than Asus also bid on the macbooks so that means Apple could theoretically double the Asus-built Macbook inventory in a month or so, so not a disaster. Also the blacks are coming in fine (which sort of lends itself to the casing quality shortage theory on the whites)- so there is something to buy although a bit more expensive out there.

I think the macbook line is the hottest PC line bar none and apple should sell millions of these. There is nothing to compete with it, really. For one thing, IT depts are looking at OS X as a unix-station, this was never possible before with a PC. Its a category defining product (OSX).

Having said all this the market expects a recession and one might be coming.
