Tim will get a huge kick out of being thought of as a snob. If anything he's an anti-snob. He's very down to earth, might even say he's earthy. But he may not know that much about Klimt.

He's entirely self-taught, so he's not locked into these strictures that most critics are.

He's taught me a lot about how colors work with one another, which is very useful in my business. And he's taught me a little bit about art. For example, his brother also has the gift. We were visiting him the other day and his brother was showing us some of the paintings he's recently done. One in particular caught his eye as being rather exceptional, which baffled me. All I saw was a vase of flowers. After he was done raving about it, I had to ask why it was such a good painting. He explained how the background complemented the foreground and how the colors in the flowers tied in with other colors on the canvas, and how some petals that had fallen to the tabletop made the painting more interesting. I understood what he meant, but still, all I saw was a vase of flowers. I guess some people 'see' it, some people don't.

I've only read Portrait of the Artist once, a long time ago, but I've heard it on tape several times. Like poetry, Joyce is better when he's read to you than actually reading it. :)
