However, due to oil, the same logic does not hold true for Iran and Saudi Arabia. They can sustain a great deal of self-destructive wackiness for a long time. AND they have huge hordes of underemployed young men just waiting to be cannon fodder.

Because they have the oil and the US wants it, and because the US has nuclear weapons and they don't, is it not easy to rationalize the events of today? Chaney and his neocon hordes want the Arab oil at any cost and the Arabs are determined to protect and safeguard their wealth.
