The emissions part, substituting it for MTBE, does make sense. Even E10 makes some sense in the reduced emmissions, despite the poor performance. The numbers suggest that these two uses would consume the surplus and any concievable additions to the surplus. It's the big push for E85 from corn that is ridiculous. You can't do a major rollout with a product that satisfies at most 2% or the nations needs. It's a huge waste of taxpayers money. If E85 is to succeed most of the ethanol will have to come from additional/other sources.

I am also seriously beginning to wonder if, when you take into account all the growing and processing activity, a switch to E85 really will cut total emmissions. You have to consume a lot more ethanol to get the same mileage as gasoline. Maybe the corn absorbs more emmissions than all the other aspects produce?
