What were the chances of the Lebanese goverment doing that, with Hizbullah in the government and free to get resupply and reinforcement from Syria and Iran? Zilch, wouldn't you say?

I hear you.. We both understand the reality of the situation.

But reality and political perception are different things. Israel is stating that they are bent upon dismantling Hizbullah in order that Lebanon be free from their tyranny (being better armed than the Lebanese army).

And it IS Lebanon's responsibility to disarm Hizbullah, and preserve border security with Israel. It is not Israel's obligation to do so. But it IS THEIR RIGHT if Lebanon's Army doesn't immediately step up to the plate and establish law and order in S. Lebanon.

But rather than putting Lebanon's Prime Minister on the international hotseat for not disarming Hizbullah, they have now essentially permitted their Prime Minister to turn this crisis into a attack upon Lebanon's sovereignty.

He knows he's powerless to disarm Hizbullah, but he's not been put in the spot of having to internationally admit that reality. So Israel's failure to offer an "alliance" with the Lebanese government to disarm Hizbullah has permitted their PM the easy political excuse that Israel is attacking Lebanon.

And he can credibly make this argument to the Arab world and international community.

Israel should have called upon the UNSC to support it's providing assistance and coordination with Lebanon to disarm Hizbullah.

And in the meantime it could still call up its reserves, conduct air strikes against Hizbullah positions in the South.

I don't fault them for the heavy response. Not at all.. But making a public display of trying to work with the Lebanese government as an ally against the terrorist group (even if rejected) would have gone far towards mitigating any criticism against the actions that Israel is taking.
