A 17-inch MacBook Pro is roughly $400 less than a similarly equipped Dell XPS M1710, notes Steve Lidberg, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities.

The Dell XPS line is what we have discussed here before- this is Dell's high end gamer line (not Alienware), that competes most closely with the Macbook Pros. The XPS line at Dell is NOT CHEAP, and overcharging for these is how they keep their margins at 2% on the other stuff.

I actually think Dell tried to meld the geek-kitsch look of an Alienware (those computers with a giant alien head) and their corporate image and this was the result. Now, if you ask me, these things were hit with an ugly stick but some of the guys here like them- and after all this line caters to the geeks not me- truth be told though, this is the only place where Dell has tried to innovate on product in a while.

Here is the M1710 that competes with the Pro 17" (looks a little like the MBP when it is open but turn it around to see the casing..... ugghhh)... it weighs 8 lbs. This one is $2400 so bare bones less than the MBP 17"
