I think you underestimate the power of diplomatic denial. It's very powerful in the hands of a pro and nobody can do it like the Arabs. World champs. When the facts are shameful, just brazen it out.

I just heard a Lebanese minister explain to a BBC interviewer that it wasn't that Hizbullah was taking the decisions for the Lebanese government, it was just that the Lebanese government and Hizbullah were in perfect accord on all points.

I don't think Olmert or anybody else could paint the Lebanese government into that corner, but he could sure waste a lot of time and political capital in the effort.
