No voluntary war has ever been a good idea. The US Civil War was a terrible thing, even though it had one positive consequence. That is a lesser of two great evils choice. If Lincoln had known how bloody that war would turn out to be he would have handled it differently I'm sure.

The definition of voluntary war is one where patience, diplomacy and a carrot/stick approach might achieve the same results.

Also, if you look back at history, every super power going back to the Greeks defeated itself by going one bridge too far, one war too far, stretching itself too thin and losing its moral compass. We are in danger of that if the far right chickenhawks get their way.
