I think that this is *exactly* why our troops are in Iraq. Nice central location from which we can reach out and "touch" someone. the thing is, from a conventional military viewpoint, we are positioned well. But, we always have a couple of trump cards. Anything that happens is going to be on their turf. The U.S. does believe in securing its borders and certainly takes any open threat seriously.

I am not sure what good it would be for Iran to have nukes without letting people know. Isn't the whole point deterence? And of course, that is our trump card. If we started to lose a conventional war in a serious way, we can up the diplomacy route and say..."perhaps you don't really want to threaten us anymore"
