I agree with you if the Koreans are buying steppers for NON-.25u product. But in .25u production process it is BEST to have every steppers .25u. Why?

1) If one .25u stepper is down then there are other .25u steppers to back it up. If you have only LIMITED number of .25u steppers for the critical layers then you are SCREWED if one or few of those tools are down. You don't have the production flexibility.

2) It is more cost benefit to have all new steppers .25u equiped. You always want to buy a tool that can last at least 2 generation of process. The price difference of a .35u Hg arc lamp and .25u DUV excimer is not that far apart. The value to calculate is

Utilization Factor= # of total wafers processed during its life/Cost of tool

The .25u has a higher utilization factor since it will be around much longer.

So if you are a manager of a big semiconductor fab and you are buying steppers for your new fab, will you buy all .25u DUV excimer or 50% of excimer and 50% Hg arc?
