RtS, you addressed the foremost question in my mind about the upcoming earnings environment. However, we have several earnings reporting periods to "wonder" about.

First of all, we have this 2nd quarter earnings reporting season which has just started. In 3 weeks, most of the reporting will be done, and I expect the actuals to be very good. We don't have long to wait to find out for sure.

Then we will have 3rd CY quarterly earnings reports coming out in Oct. These reports should be good as well based on recent Bookings comments for the semi-equip companies. Even CSFB has capitulated recently and allows as how the 3rd quarter will be "flat" to up, but of course, then they say the downturn begins.

IMO, earnings will trail off at some point - they have to really - can't keep going up forever in a straight line. The question is - how much will they fall off. A lot depends on how far the Fed "kills" the economy. The answer to that we don't know yet, and it is probably the most important bit of information with respect to how far earnings will retrench.

As far as new computers go - I'm just like the next person and I would love to have one, but I'm going to wait for the new operating system as well. As you say - new toys are always fun.
