I think my ancestors fought for a number of reasons.

1. they were stupid.
2. they had too many cows to graze on the land they had.
3. they thought they could win.
4. they were drunk, sometimes with power.
5. all of the above.

(Courage is only needed if it is a close fight. Harold Godwin lost that one. If his men had been better rested, and more disciplined, world history might have been much different.)

One thing that is heritage from the Battle of Hastings, and not well enough averted 149 years later was institutionalized government theft whose sole purpose was to support an oppressive government. We inherited the Norman police state.
