It may just be impossible to put humpty back together again. And this israelis may just find this out in lebanon as well. It seems to me that no matter what is done or not done in this region, the results or lack thereof are always worse. Iraq seems doomed to three state solutions which brings iran into iraq more directly, syria perhaps into sunniland and God knows what develops between turks and kurds or turks and syria for that matter. As for Lebanon what comes next might be some sort of partitioned state as well. But of course if the US had done nothing in iraq, what might have saddam wrought by now and if the israelis dont take out hizbollah, what fun and games down the road for them and for us.
On this thread i used to think of myself as man in the middle--now i think i am man in the muddle. History tells us the Mideast is more like quicksand that desert sand. Empires are pulled down and colonizers, invaders ultimately fail. I think we have to understand that we will never have a very good success percentage there but as in baseball 300 may get you a berth on the all star team. I sense you sense the muddle we are in is larger than one president, or one ayotollah. The mess would have happened even if diametrically different policies had been followed by a far better admin. Quicksand takes the competent down as well as the inept.
