"If it is recyled through corn in 1 year or recycled through oil in a million years it doesn't matter."

If we weren't burning it faster than it can be recycled, you'd have a point. Since we are...

"It's a symptom of the actual problem which is that we use hydrocarbons as our principal energy source."

Again, it is very convenient. It is difficult to get than kind of energy density without being radioactive or very explosive. Hydrocarbons tend to stay in the tank, are reasonably non-corrosives, can be easily handled and used at room temperature, can be delivered in a pipeline made of common materials, etc., etc. Plus, it has the added bonus we have a lot of experience handling it. To have a prayer of being used, any replacement has to be drop in.

Saying we need to reduce our usage is all well, fine and good. But the reality is that is only one part of the puzzle. Expecting people to take cuts in their lifestyle just isn't realistic. It might be possible to get people to accept smaller and lighter cars and give up on such large numbers of SUVs and pickups. It is very likely you can get more people to use compact fluorescent bulbs. But I ain't giving up my air conditioner when the heat index hits 120 in the summer. I am sure that those up north aren't going to give up their heaters in the winter, although I could. And unless we rebuild our cities, I don't see people giving up their cars. That is reality.
