"I take it, though, that you think Israel is being stupid in raising the bet?"

Where did I say that? Israel is pursuing their own best interest. I don't think it is best for the region because Lebanon is likely to be even more of a Syrian puppet in the aftermath. They are trying to goad Syria and/or Iran to Do Something Stupid, but I don't think they will bite. If they don't bite, there is a good chance that Hezbollah will fall apart. It won't escape attention that Hezbollah was supplied with insufficient weapons to do anything but cause a nuisance. When they got swatted, Syria and Iran sat on their hands.

As a result, I expect Israel to search any house they come upon. If there is a truck with rockets parked in the garage, or there are other military weapons, they call a bulldozer over and...

The message is, you work with Hezbollah and you will be punished. Iran won't protect you. Syria won't protect you. Hezbollah damn sure won't protect you.

However, the Lebanese experiment with democracy is probably over. That isn't good long term.
