Cooters,

At the time we tested off load PRI using SONUS, we had several vendors in the lab at one time. The testing was done back in the 2001 to 2002 time frame.

One vendor was in the middle of their testing when they went through a lay off and their packet project was scrapped.

Another vendor had a bolt on solution, which reminded me of when we bolted an electronic unit onto the step by step office to simulate touch tone service. This is a case of the RBOC bean counters trying to get as much blood out of the embedded legacy switches as possible.

I personally believe that the officers of the RBOC’s did not see the transformation to packet switching coming until around the 2010 time frame. The competition has forced the RBOC’s into a survival mode and we should start seeing some Class 5 replacements next year. In our work environment we were using a PBX or Centrex form Nortel; I would have to reboot my desk phone about 2 to three times a month. The IP PBX service was a joke.

We had other vendors in the lab at the same time as SONUS equipment. I can not reveal vendor names that were in the lab, but I believe that you can make out who was who. The Nortel PBX used by our RBOC is common knowledge.

I may be called back to do some contract work at a latter date and I don’t want to spout off to much on a chat room board. I was just a technician and not one in authority to make purchasing decisions. The purchasing decisions are in another department within the research department. I did not have access to any information that could be interpreted as insider information.

I started out investing my 401K at work and tried to buy and hold various companies and it seemed that all I was doing was losing money. I read an investment book about that same time that said invest in something that you know and at that time packet switching was just getting started then. I know the telco industry so I went looking at various vendors in the telco equipment field and bought SONUS because I believe that they will be one of the key players in the very near future.

The problem with SONUS is they are trying to get past the stigma of 2004…..

I know that this is vague but as you can see I can not afford to spout off on a message board.

Thanks,

Half Gator
