(1) $800 million $$ project

FINANCIER of the $US800 million (K2.5 billion) Ramu nickel project, China Metallurgical Construction Company (MCC), has been recognised for its investment in the country.

The Papua New Guinea Embassy in Beijing, Peoples?Republic of China recognised MCC, Covec (PNG) Limited and BNBM Hardware for their ?ireless efforts to provide services to Papua New Guinea?and awarded them with 30th Independence anniversary medals.

Covec (PNG) Limited is involved in road works, bridge construction, earthmoving and building works in the country while BNBM is a hardware store specialising in supplying white goods.

PNG Ambassador to China Max Rai said on their website that the award ceremony took place at the chancery of the Embassy of Papua New Guinea.

Company representatives Charlie Fu (former manager of Covec (PNG) Ltd), Thomas Chao of BNBM and Madam Luo of MCC were present at the ceremony to receive their medals.

China Metallurgical and Construction Company is a major Chinese construction company owned by the Peoples?Republic of China.

In February last year, MCC entered into a heads of agreement between Ramu Nickel Limited (a wholly owned subsidiary of Highlands Pacific Limited) and Mineral Resources Development Company ?a company owned by the PNG Government.

Under the agreement, MCC can acquire an 85 per cent interest in the Ramu Nickel Project.

Bilateral relations between the Peoples?Republic of China and Papua New Guinea have blossomed over the years with exchanges between the two countries in different areas, including economic and politics deepening.
The Ramu nickel project is one of the major investments that a Chinese public company had decided to invest in the country.

China is also PNG? major trade partner with more raw materials entering the Chinese market and manufactured goods from China entering the PNG markets.
Bilateral trade between PNG and China reached $US186 million (K596 million) while in the following years it increased by 60 per cent.

question - does that Chinese company have stock?
also - LOTS of environmental concerns if you google it

Ramu is a large "wet tropical" laterite nickel/cobalt project located in the Madang Province of PNG, containing an estimated 143 mln metric tons of ore grading 1.01 pct nickel and 0.10 pct cobalt.
