Steve: I usually just lurk on this thread, not being able to talk tech-ese, but your comments prompt me to make a few layman's observations:

--While not technologically exciting to the professional geek, NC may be just the ticket for the unwashed masses who have postponed learning how to surf the net and do "basic computing tasks" because computer builders have kept the price up by constantly adding more bells and whistles. I'm not just speaking about Americans, either--Europeans by nature are hesitant to embrace technology (the microwave oven, for example, is just finally catching on).

--The Apple name is much more popular worldwide than most Americans know, and a cheaper product with such a renowned label is bound to go over very well in many places outside the U.S. If Apple rebounds overseas, I would expect a subsequent rebound at home once the bad press stops.
