This guy woke me up (First link). I first heard about PO in '72. Other than becoming a hippie organic farmer (totally legal, which is why it didn't work, totally certified organic), didn't do much else until he went to work on Willits by showing End of Suburbia about 50 people, and it just exploded.

And more power to you.. So long as whatever you do is not dependent upon long-term subsidization by the taxpayers in order to compete against the private market.

The only REAL solution to energy dependency is a market based solution. I believe the profit based motive to innovation of any kind is the most efficient solution to any given economic problem.

This is why I was so exicited to hear about Nanosolar's photovoltaic breakthrough.. If we're able to bring down the cost of solar power to the point where its competitive with fossil fuel generation, then what we'll create is the equivalent of an "energy internet" with no centralized point of failure from a generation location. So many homes will incorporate the solar technology into their home designs that it will drive down the price of electricity (probably to the point where this solar technology is once again cost-inefficient compared to future costs of generation), and this will be a BOON to economic growth.

Combine that with the ability of people to power their own hydrogen generation capabilities, and they can produce their own vehicle fuel.

It's still a long way off, but that's the vision I think I would like to see transpire.
