How about the notion that the radical Islamic leaders just want power and that terrorism is the way they think they can achieve it? They have the ability to motivate and indoctrinate youth and others who feel oppressed.

In order to motivate in this context, there has to be an identified enemy. The U.S. and western civilization at large provide good targets because of the huge disparity in size, power and wealth.

I notice that some are quick to ascribe those type of tactics to the U.S. government (e.g. using the war on terror to justify other activities and to garner more power.)

Why should the opposition be any different?

I just don't buy the notion that terrorist actions are somehow justified or justifiable because of perceived wrongs
perpetrated by the U.S. or the west at large. At minimum, if that position is being advocated, the corollary should likewise apply, i.e., that response to terrorism is equally justified.

What I find interesting is that you often find people willing to justify the terrorism, but not the response to it.

Just some random thoughts............
