The primary purpose of our education spending is to educate our children. We should spend it whatever way achieves the result best. We all know our public schools aren't doing a good job and the reason for that is not a lack of money.

Medicare overhead 2%
Private insurance profit, overhead, garbage 20%

I'm sure there is some pro-socialist outfit which has published the above. But I have my doubts whether the numbers are accurate.

If the private and monopolistic AMA would get out of the way, we might have decent healthcare as well rather than the dismal, expensive chaotic mess we are saddled with.

I think we have pretty decent healthcare already.

SS - one of the best programs ever.

Yes, it pretty much eliminated poverty among the elderly. Yet, it along with medicare, is poised to devastate our economy in the next few decades. There are now about 5 people between 20 and 64 for every one over 65. Accordingly, a tax of 12.4% payroll tax is able to fund social security and medicare with a little surplus left over.

But what about when that ratio is 3:1? Or 2.5:1? Are we going to raise the payroll tax to 25%? Are we going to break the nation's promises to the retired? The system isn't going to work and the economic consequences for the country are going to be dire.

Far too many people don't have the savings/investment to fund their own retirement and health care partly because they've been conditioned to depend on the government.

BTW this is not merely a US problem. Europe, Japan, Russia, China all have the same problem with even worse demographics than ours.
