PEGGY NOONAN: "If you talk to a brilliant scholar ... he will say with honest perplexity that he cannot understand--really cannot understand--why people would not want men to marry men, or women women."
I had some lib friends over for dinner, and in the middle of a normal conversation about normal things, the female of the couple said out of the blue "You are a conservative, are you not, let me ask you a question that has been puzzling me, why are you conservatives so against gay marriage?"
This seemed to her to be the PRIMARY ISSUE OF THE DAY.
I told her I did not think it was a big deal, no need to POPULARIZE the idea, status quo seemed OK. If you make it legal everyone will want to do it. Like legalizing drugs, next thing you know, everyone will be on crack.
It may seem to be a reasonable lifestyle CHOICE COMPARED to the other ROLE MODELS TODAY. It's HARD out there being a young person. You look to the music like we had the Beatles, now we have that catchy OSCAR tune : "It's hard out there for a ****". Must be HARD for their B*****S and *** too. Must look for an ALTERNATIVE.
It seems to me the big question of the day is not "Is Oprah Gay?", but rather, "Why is Oprah NOT Gay?". I mean if you look at Gail VS. Steadman, you ask yourself "Is this a difficult choice?" Does Oprah have a PROBLEM with becoming Gay?
I think when Hillary goes on MTV next year, they are not going to ask about her underwear, but will be more serious, and ask "Have you ever thought of what it would be like to be gay?" I am sure she will have prepared a suitable response.
It also reminds me of the last Presidential debate when that VietNam War Hero asked Pres. Bush : "Did you know that Dick goes hunting with his GAY daughter?" And the President responded "Dick who?" It made me Scratch My Head and Wonder : "What does being Gay have to do with Hunting?"
Is this the ISSUE of our times? |
