No reason to annihilate people you're trading with. Somehow Astor's message didn't catch on with most of the rest of the new Americans as they spread westward. Seems like they made a lot of promises about fair trade and all that and ended up pretty much mowing down anyone and anything that got in their way, including the buffalo. Our modern definition of free trade is a bit different from the notion that I will take whatever I want from you so it will be free for me. Look, I am not on a soapbox about all this but the basic definition that western civilization expanded benevolently is a crock, the occasional beneficial millionaire excepted.
