They want to knock us down a peg or two or as many more as they can and see us quake.

Using a one-size-fits-all generality seems naive to me. I'm certain there are differing aims, as well as substantial differences in their willingness and capacity for actually striking us.

And what of bin Laden's goals? He seems only to want all Westerners out of Saudi Arabia.
