RAMALLAH, West Bank — The Bush administration is spending foreign aid money to increase the popularity of the Palestinian Authority on the eve of crucial elections in which the governing party faces a serious challenge from the radical Islamic group Hamas.
The approximately $2 million program is being led by a division of the U.S. Agency for International Development. But no U.S. government logos appear with the projects or events being undertaken as part of the campaign, which bears no evidence of U.S. involvement and does not fall within the definitions of traditional development work. ... U.S. and Palestinian officials say they fear the election, scheduled for Wednesday, will result in a large Hamas presence in the 132-seat legislature. Hamas, formally known as the Islamic Resistance Movement, is at war with Israel and is classified by the U.S. government as a terrorist organization. But its reputation for competence and accountability in providing social services has made it a stiff rival of the secular Fatah movement, which runs the Palestinian Authority and has long been the largest party in the Palestinian territories.
The “secular” Fatah movement? With a “wing” called the “Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades?” That secular movement? littlegreenfootballs.com ================
"Let people choose their governments via honest and fair elections." Sometimes that gets so messy; like when we don't like the winner.
Despair amongst PA employees with further delays in salary as US, EU cuts aid to Palestians International Middle East Media Center 4/14/2006 Despair and fear is on the rise among Palestinian Authority employees [one of the largest sectors of the employed in Palestine] because of the delay in getting their salaries. After the European Union, and other countries declared they would cease sending financial assistance to the Palestinian government after the Hamas party won the Palestinian Legislative Council elections, a major percentage of Palestinians are going without paychecks. In the recent past, before the Hamas win, millions of dollars of aid came to the Palestinian government which helped immensely to pay employees in a land frozen by closures, checkpoints, attacks on agricultural lands, and production facilities. Now the Hamas government is running on next to nothing vtjp.org ''''''''''''''''' "I do not include US policy as being part of some attempt to force people to submit to US empire, although I can almost guarantee that some moron on this thread is going to assert this"
