I thought that was a very good post, Brumar.

"Glee" has been expressed elsewhere, if not on SI -- which is a more respectable site than others on the Internet.

When it comes to soldiers dying in Iraq, what I think is more common on SI, and on the liberal side generally, is "satisfaction".

I am sure I have seen posts on SI calling attention to the latest death totals for troops. And I know that one or more newspapers has been (or was) running a daily tally.

It is hard for me to perceive such notations as anything other than satisfaction. Everyone wants their position to be validated, and if one is against the war then it makes sense that satisfaction is taken from seeing the death toll rise.

Put the other way, if the death toll were to sharply decline, it would be difficult for an anti-war person to see that as good news.

Sadly, I think that is just human nature.
