It's a hell of an ethical conundrum: Israel know that mosques and civilians are used to disguise Hizbullah assets. These assets, if not taken out, will someday kill Israeli civilians. But it also knows that taking them out will inevitably kill Lebanese civilians who may or may not be assisting Hizbollah voluntarily.

What to do?

I suppose that to protect its own citizens from a group devoted to killing all of them, Israel must deal with the assets, but it must do so in a manner which minimizes loss of civilian life. Steps to be taken include warnings, precise targetting, etc.

Of course, some civilians will be killed. These will be held up as examples of Israeli brutality and disproportionate use of force whereas some part of these losses are in actuality the victims of Hizbollah.

War is hell.
