Lots and lots of folks here in Louisiana grow tomatoes in their backyards. Talk about good!
My retired uncle is a funny guy. An engineer for Big Bad Exxon all his working life, he owned a fishing/hunting camp at which he grew all kinds of stuff. On retirement, he bought about a 60 acre piece of land on which he has a very bare hut. He grows everything under the sun by hand--delicious persimmons, tomatoes, bell peppers, cabbages, peaches, satsumas, oranges, limes , lemons, pecans, and whatever strikes his fancy.
He has grown so good at this hobby/avocation that he grows too much to keep our family suplied, so he distributes the surplus, free of charge, to soup kitchens, churches, etc.
Doing all of this also keeps him in terrific shape. He's at least 80 years old and I'm sure his strength and aerobic capacity are more than mine. Not an ounce of flab on him. Three times a week at a minimum he'll go to his spread and weed, cut, hoe, plant..........all by hand, from sunup to sundown, in good weather and bad, in the summer, which is no walk in the park around here, and in our beautiful Spring and Fall.
The results are terrific. |
