Australian scientists hope new drug will cure Alzheimer's

Melbourne scientists have developed a pill they hope may cure Alzheimer's disease.

The drug called PBT2 was developed by a team at the Mental Health Research Institute of Victoria in collaboration with Melbourne-based Prana Biotechnology.

The director of the Mental Health Research Institute, Professor George Fink, says human trials of the drug start next month.

Professor Fink says the drug stops the build-up of a protein called amyloid - the root cause of Alzheimer's.

"It works incredibly quickly, within 24 hours or so, all the amyloid beta protein in at least transgenic mice that we've looked at, in brain disappears, so it holds the prospect if the same happens in the human of, not necessarily a cure, but certainly a powerful intervention," he said.
