According to Wikipedia, "personal God" has multiple meanings.

I was just wondering what this particular person meant. But the statistics apparently come from some fairly narrow survey questions, "do you believe in a God who actively communicates with mankind, who answers prayers, do you believe in an afterlife?"

I would guess that the basis for such narrow questions is that the person asking the questions had a theological reason for them, but I don't know what it is. Presumably if you don't believe just so, your beliefs are not acceptable.

Broader questions that cast a wider net catch more believers. 93% of Americans believe in some sort of God.
