It clearly shows that a wide majority now disapprove of the way Bush handled Iraq, and that there is a pessimism now that is pretty much terminal. If Bush were running for re-election this would make him toast, but he's not running again. Even so, in November there are dozens of vulnerable rightwing congressmen who were Bush yes-men. Many of them might now be goners, and they control the balance of power in congress.
That said, a large majority believe the Iraqis are better off without Saddam Hussein, support our troops (of course, almost all of us do) and even think Saddam had strong ties to Al Qaida. Of course the public is wrong about the Al Qaida ties, but many of those who refuse to actively disbelieve and reject Bush are the swingvoters in the middle.
Bushie cheating aside, those middle-of-the-road sometimes ill-informed voters control the destiny of states like Ohio, West Virginia, Iowa, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado in coming elections. Those are the voters democrats need on their side, along with more Hispanic voters (Bush got way too many in 2004, about 42%) and "security moms". We cannot afford anymore tied elections that give unethical Bushies the advantage of being able to cheat their way back into power. |
