I don't think it's a muddle to the participants. Given your experience in Yugoslavia, I assume you don't have any difficulty in seeing Christian vs. Muslim as something meaningful to the participants. My argument is that Sunni Muslim vs. Shi'a Muslim is as significant to the participants as Christian vs. Muslim, or Jew vs. Muslim. It's not something you or I can identify with, certainly not something we agree with, or approve, but it's real to them. We're at a point in time, a place in time, we never thought we'd be in again, but here we are.
