The irony in former Yugoslavia is that virtually no one fighting in the name of religion had been a practicing devotee for the previous 45 years under communism. Nobody cared outside the handfuls inside the churches and the mosques and the old Orthodox monasteries. It was just a handy us/them label once Tito was gone.

The ME is a whole other kettle of fish since religion defines so much of daily life there. I reach my limits of comprehension when I try to figure out what Bin Laden's position to the right of the Wahabis has to do with the Taliban has to do with Iranian Shiites has to do with Hezbollah has to do with the Palestinians has to do with Hamas and so on, and what they all have to do in opposition to both radical and moderate Sunnis, Arab Christians, Israeli Jews, Israeli Arabs, Kurds and Turkmen, etc.

The Balkans are very simple in comparison. Which is probably why we could put a lid on there and failed so far in the ME.
