Believe (apart from the $profits$ involved :-) it's regarded as a major method of influencing nations, keeping them in your 'sphere of influence', having leverage over them, etc.

In Central and Southern Asia and the Middle East we compete for influence (the so-called "Great Game") with Russia and with China.

Russia's influence is returning (from it's serious post-Soviet slump) to perhaps something more similar to that enjoyed in Czarist days when they (& Britain) were the powers in Asia... while China's influence (because of it's hugely growing economy, it's resource consumption, it's military, and because it's 'not the US') is rising FAST.

Russia & China got Uzbekistan to kick us out, while China opens an oil pipeline from Kazakistan this year... and has signed a gas deal with Iran (Russia has their nuclear deal with Iran), and has military sales there also. China is also a military ally & supplier to Pakistan (to counter India).

A China/Iran axis is forming.
