Those who seek to destroy Israel are using a smart strategy. The rockets they launch kill a handful of people -- they know they can't win that way. What they count on is that Israel will in time deploy its superior military as well as engage in tactics that the world will condemn. As soon as Israel attacks, their enemies win.

Israel cannot win this conflict on the battlefield because it is not a military conflict. What Israel needs to do is develop widespread political support. Israel has diplomatic support in Washington -- and that is about it. To survive in the long run Israel will need to get international opinion on its side -- and that means showing restraint and a massive diplomatic effort. Israel has no friends -- it is time to make friends, as many as possible, and isolate the slimeballs that hurl rockets into their homes. This is the only way to cut them deeply.
