FWIW, The TXN CC took a couple of digs at QCOM / CDMA early on citing a "study" --- “25 CDMA operators are using or planning to use the GSM standard”

Nothing new hear, except the recent IBD article stated “A GSM marketing association claims up to 25 CDMA carriers may soon adopt GSM-type technology”

To which Bill Keitel replied>>>>

William Keitel, Qualcomm's chief financial officer, downplays the issue. He concedes that some big CDMA users are eyeing GSM, but the numbers cited by GSM backers are nonsense, he says.

Some carriers are just adding GSM networks to existing CDMA systems, Keitel says.

"There are operators we're aware of that may be considering whether to overlay with GSM," he said in an interview. "But I'm not aware of anyone that's going to be shutting down their CDMA systems."

Reasons for switching from CDMA to GSM vary. Most wireless firms need more radio spectrum, and GSM spectrum licenses are easier to get.

FWIW, I don’t put a lot of faith in what NOK , TXN and the other GSM incumbents say wrt QCOM / CDMA.

+ About two years NOK/ TXN/ STM were going to turn CDMA on it’s ear with the planned JV (no details / answers could be provided during their hastily called CC) to whip out EV-DV chipsets.

+ About the same time NOK was boasting about how it would soon capture 20%+ of the CDMA market.

+ More recently wrt the Q’s GSM IPR suit, NOK originally stated their license with Qualcomm included GSM rights, and a short time later NOK back tracked and stated "We have received no offer from Qualcomm that was on fair, reasonable and nondiscriminatory terms."

+ Then again, some may recall the Bill Gates memo in which Jorma stated Qualcomm’s EV-DO was a fraud.

Over the years I’ve come not to believe everything NOK/ TXN/ the GSMA say.
