When I need to be. I've got some positions I hold for 3 years, and some that I hold for three hours. Depends on what information convinvced me the risk:reward was favorable in the first place, and what sort of move I'm expecting out of a specific trade. I'm not married to a time frame though and I'm not usually a day trader. Usually my holding period is shorter on shorts compared to longs, and option trades are shorter than going long or short the stock.
